His signature weapon becomes a simple whip, which he learns to wield alongside parkour techniques taught by his mentor, the mercenary Clind. Subaru is a complex and controversial protagonist: he is arrogant, immature, selfish, and prone to emotional outbursts — but also kind, selfless, and capable of enduring unimaginable suffering for the sake of others. Author Tappei Nagatsuki deliberately designed Subaru to be "not cool," rejecting the typical power fantasy isekai hero in favor of a flawed, painfully human character who develops not by becoming stronger, but by learning to accept his weaknesses and rely on others.
