Subaru Natsuki (Japanese: ナツキ・スバル, Natsuki Subaru) is the main protagonist of the light novel, manga, and anime series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World, created by Tappei Nagatsuki and illustrated by Shin'ichirō Ōtsuka. The anime adaptation, produced by White Fox, began airing in April 2016. Subaru is voiced by Yūsuke Kobayashi in Japanese and Sean Chiplock in English. The story follows Subaru Natsuki, a 17-year-old hikikomori and self-proclaimed NEET who spends his days playing video games. On his way home from a convenience store one night, he is suddenly transported to a fantasy world — though he has no idea why or how he got there. Immediately upon arrival, he is attacked by thugs but is rescued by a beautiful silver-haired half-elf girl named Emilia. Grateful and instantly infatuated, Subaru offers to help her retrieve her stolen insignia — only for both of them to be brutally murdered shortly after. Subaru awakens exactly where he first arrived, discovering he has acquired a mysterious ability he names "Return by Death" — the power to rewind time to a specific point whenever he dies, while retaining all memories of his previous failed timelines. Subaru's ability is both a blessing and a curse. Each death is excruciatingly painful and traumatic, and he is the only person who remembers what transpired in every failed timeline. He cannot speak about his ability — any attempt to reveal it causes an invisible force to squeeze his heart, and those who hear him risk being killed. Despite his power, Subaru is physically weak — he possesses no superhuman strength, no magical talent (aside from a low-level, self-taught Yin magic: Shamak, which creates a blindspot), and no combat skills. Unlike typical isekai protagonists, Subaru's only weapons are his knowledge from repeated deaths and his unyielding determination to protect the people he loves. Subaru takes a job as a butler at the mansion of Roswaal L. Mathers, a powerful margrave who supports Emilia's candidacy to become the next ruler of the Kingdom of Lugunica. There, he befriends the twin maids Rem and Ram — the former initially suspicious of him but eventually confessing her love for him despite knowing his heart belongs to Emilia. Subaru also forms a contract with Beatrice, a 400-year-old spirit who becomes his contracted partner, teaching him limited magic and eventually addressing him as her beloved "I suppose." Throughout the series, Subaru repeatedly faces impossible situations — curses, assassinations, political conspiracies, the White Whale, and the Great Rabbit — that force him to die over and over, learning from each failure to inch closer toward a future where his loved ones survive. His lowest point comes during the royal selection ceremony, where his arrogance and desperation lead him to embarrass Emilia publicly, causing her to cut ties with him. Broken and alone, Subaru spirals into despair until Rem's unwavering belief in him — and her famous speech urging him to "start from zero" — pulls him back. After reconciling with Emilia, Subaru confesses his love for her, becoming her official knight. His signature weapon becomes a simple whip, which he learns to wield alongside parkour techniques taught by his mentor, the mercenary Clind. Subaru is a complex and controversial protagonist: he is arrogant, immature, selfish, and prone to emotional outbursts — but also kind, selfless, and capable of enduring unimaginable suffering for the sake of others. Author Tappei Nagatsuki deliberately designed Subaru to be "not cool," rejecting the typical power fantasy isekai hero in favor of a flawed, painfully human character who develops not by becoming stronger, but by learning to accept his weaknesses and rely on others. Subaru won the "Best Character (Male)" award at the 2015–2016 Newtype Anime Awards, and his Japanese voice actor Yūsuke Kobayashi won the "Best Seiyuu" award at the 2020 Crunchyroll Anime Awards #щп #anime #reality #fyp #щитпост
