Ratio goes by the youngest children in the group, so actually not in ratio unless there are 2 educators present.

Your math is not working. It goes by the ratio of the youngest in the room.

DAYCARE PROVIDER HERE!! in the mornings and evenings most centers combine! i’ve worked in multiple situations where this has happened. they are usually around the same ages, so infants and 18 months can combine and 2- preschool can also combine. once ratio is over they do have to start splitting.

I’m a centre director. Whoever taught you how to combine ratios taught you wrong I’m afraid. In this scenario, two of the 3-5’s get brought down to make a ratio of four with the two 0-3’s, then a second educator is needed for the remaining 3-5’s. The parent is right to say something.

this is bizarre to me. in my state you have to go by the youngest child. i would never want it any other way

As someone with dyscalculia, it does take me a minute to work the ratio out when we mix ages 😂 but that ratio for over 3 is WILD to me - we’re 1:8 for over 3, 1:5 for 2-3, and 1:3 for under 2’s!

Our center & state ; say that the ratio is followed for the youngest in the room so it would still be 4.

Tbh I think legally/policy the ratio should be no educator is ever alone! Not some random new gecko test that means nothing to someone who breaks the law regardless

everywhere I've worked if you combine kids the ratio defaults to the lowest age so this room is out of ratio

It’s the same parent that expects her child’s educator to be there when she drops off at 6am and picks up at 6pm

this type of ratio used to be allowed!! it was like you could do some math and make the ratio in the middle.. it was super weird, but helpful, sadly it’s not in most places anymore:(

when i worked in a daycare it was 1/4 for infants 1/6 for toddlers 1/10 for preschoolers and 1/12 for school age. If the toddlers or up were going on an outing then it was 2 workers per group

In Queensland, as soon as you have even 1 1:4 child, all other children must go into the 1:4 ratio no matter their age
