@engineeringexcellence: 🌀 3 cool facts about NASA’s Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine (RDRE): 1️ It detonates fuel instead of just burning it. Normal rockets rely on a steady flame, but this engine uses a continuous detonation - basically a controlled explosion that races around a ring-shaped channel over and over. That detonation-based combustion is more efficient, meaning more thrust from less fuel. 2️⃣ The whole thing is 3D printed. NASA built this engine using metal 3D printing, then hot-fired it for 251 seconds - over four minutes straight - without it melting down. Printing it this way makes the design lighter and faster to iterate on. 3️⃣ It’s being built for the Moon and Mars. In its record test it produced more than 5,800 pounds of thrust, enough to handle a lunar landing or a deep-space burn. NASA sees this as a key step toward lighter propulsion that can carry more payload further into deep space. The future of space travel might literally run on spinning explosions. 😳 #space #nasa #rocket #engineering #engine
It’s just a regular rocket engine gang it’s just not a bell design

this design took 3 years to make btw and only because we have no budget at nasa, give just the rocket engineers a 5% increase and we’d be on mars tomorrow

Most engines are combustion. But to have a detonation for your combustions is very different

correct me if i'm wrong isn't every engine run on miniature explosions?

the fact that we still have the combustion engine after all these years is starting to fatigue, there's proof that there are way more powerful engines using different energy sources

Ok I know the science behind this one, it literally sends shockwaves around the engine cone and uses the shockwaves to both move fuel and generate thrust

forcing hypergolics into a high compression reaction is one of those things that either works right or goes kaboom very badly. If we can make that a more efficient and reliable process, good.
