@the.dutch.archeologist: The Dutch Built the World’s Biggest Moving Sea Barrier The Netherlands built one of the most incredible engineering projects in the world: the Maeslantkering. This massive Dutch storm surge barrier near Rotterdam has two enormous rotating arms designed to protect Europe’s largest port from the North Sea. When a dangerous storm surge threatens the country, the barrier can close automatically and block the sea from entering the Nieuwe Waterweg. It is one of the largest moving structures ever built and a symbol of Dutch engineering, flood protection, and the Netherlands’ centuries-long battle against water. #DutchHistory #Netherlands #Engineering #Maeslantkering #Rotterdam
