I would like to file a formal complaint regarding a recent ride that left me feeling extremely uncomfortable and unsafe.
During the ride, the driver repeatedly asked where I was from. After I told him that I am from Mainland China, he continuously questioned me about why I could speak English. He stated several times that, in his opinion, Chinese people cannot speak English and cannot even speak a single word of English.
The driver repeatedly tried to confirm whether I was Malaysian Chinese or from Mainland China. Once he confirmed that I was from Mainland China, he began making negative generalizations about Chinese people. He repeatedly described Mainland Chinese people as rude, impolite, and lacking manners, and repeatedly questioned me about why people from my country behave that way.
I attempted to remain calm and explained that language barriers may sometimes cause misunderstandings, and that it is unfair to judge an entire nationality based on individual experiences. However, the driver continued making generalized negative remarks about Chinese people and continued speaking to me in an aggressive manner.
What concerned me most was not simply his personal opinion, but the way he directed these comments toward me as a passenger solely because of my nationality. I had done nothing inappropriate during the ride, yet I felt as though I was being interrogated and blamed for the actions of other people.
As a female passenger travelling alone at night, I found the driver’s tone and behaviour intimidating. His repeated comments and aggressive manner made me feel uncomfortable and unsafe throughout the journey.
Because of the driver’s behaviour, I eventually felt the need to record part of the interaction for my own protection. I did not begin recording immediately; I only started recording after I became concerned by the driver’s repeated questioning and increasingly aggressive tone.
I believe all passengers should be treated with respect regardless of their nationality, ethnicity, or background. I respectfully request that Grab investigate this incident and take appropriate action.
