I got a serious question for Americans.. and I’m being 100% serious. Has anybody noticed that the milk doesn’t last as long as it used to? Like I feel like it goes bad even before the expiration date.

In fairness... our government makes our dairy farmers throw away a lot of milk to protect the pricing. They also pay people to not grow specific things, also to protect pricing. At one time people were forced to grow specific crops because other crops were worth more but the one crop was needed more. (cannabis/hemp vs tobacco). We really aren't a lot better in this arena.

Then the government demands dairy farmers to dump milk and subsidies them for a fraction for lost product 🤷🏻♀️Its so messed up.

seems like you are researching from a USA perspective, perhaps you might also include the Canadian perspective on this.

It’s also the same with the lumber industry as Canada subsidizes their logging and lumber industry.

This hit Wisconsin really hard. I knew folks that dumping milk because they didn’t have any one to sell it too, because Grassland Dairy canceled their contracts. Which had a ripple effect in the milk/cheese market.

I'll say: there was a huge issue with Monsanto tainted the quality of milk in America. the situation was(or still is) a matter of using certain drugs to increase the amount of milk in a cow. the result was a high infection rate in the udders which were resulting in having a very disgusting milk product. this tariff was in place to keep the milk from coming to Canada because the milk standard was above this. this may relate to this.

I think there is another reason why the Canadian government is so protective of its diary industry. The province of Quebec is the largest producer of diary in Canada. Because of the separatist threat in that province the Canadian government is not looking to create an issue that could swing votes to sovereignty parties. Quebec also has a huge impact on federal elections, so it is the difference between a majority and minority government.

Our farmers have punishing quotas on their production limitations, don't forget to mention that 🤔

Doesn't the US have a quota system for their dairy too? I'm fine with countries protecting their dairy industry or other vital industries. The US has a quota system for sugar which keeps prices artificially high. So Canada isn't the only one that does this.

Hi from my understanding Canada also restricts milking cows when on antibiotics. Where the USA does not so I think this is a problem for imports. I honestly agree not allowing milk being shipped that has antibiotics in it. I am not sure if this is still standard for the states.
