Graham’s number is one of the largest numbers ever used in a serious mathematical proof. It was introduced by mathematician Ronald Graham in the field of Ramsey theory, where mathematicians study patterns that must appear when objects are arranged in certain ways. Graham’s number is so enormous that it cannot realistically be written out using ordinary decimal notation. Even if every digit were stored using every available particle in the observable universe, there would not be enough space to write it down. To describe Graham’s number, mathematicians use Knuth’s up-arrow notation, which represents extremely large repeated operations. It starts with numbers that are already unimaginably huge and then repeatedly applies these operations many times. For comparison, a googol is 1 followed by 100 zeros, while a googolplex is 1 followed by a googol zeros. Graham’s number is vastly larger than both.
