Preparing lunch for 20 meat rabbits looks a lot different when you stop relying only on feed pellets. Today’s rabbit “salad bar” was fresh weeds, grasses, tree branches, honeysuckle, red clover, comfrey, mint, and red raspberry leaves straight from the homestead. 🌿🐇 A lot of people don’t realize rabbits were designed to eat a wide variety of forage—not just pellets out of a bag. Different plants offer different nutrients, minerals, fiber levels, and natural compounds—which is why variety matters so much. Branches help with chewing and enrichment. Clovers and grasses add fiber and diversity. Comfrey is packed with nutrients. Mint and raspberry leaves are favorites around here. And rotating forage helps mimic the natural variety rabbits would seek out on their own. And this is where the savings come in. When you’re feeding 20 meat rabbits, pellets disappear fast. Even replacing part of their daily feed with safe forage can save a lot over the summer. If each rabbit eats even a little less pellets because they’re getting fresh forage, that adds up quickly over weeks and months. That doesn’t mean we don’t feed pellets — we still do — but every bucket of clover, grasses, branches, comfrey, mint, honeysuckle, and raspberry leaves helps stretch the feed bill and build a more sustainable system. Summer is the perfect time to start learning what naturally grows on your land and how to use it wisely. This is one of the biggest differences between simply owning rabbits… and actually building a sustainable homestead system. And honestly, watching 20 rabbits crunch fresh forage at the same time is one of the most peaceful sounds on the homestead. 🌿🐇 #MeatRabbits #RabbitRaising #HomesteadLife #Homesteading #RabbitFeed
