POV: A young Kamikaze pilot on his final mission, 1945. By this point in the war, Japan was losing badly. The once-powerful Imperial Navy was crippled, and conventional attacks were no longer effective against the overwhelming American forces. Instead of sending pilots on missions they were expected to return from, Japan began using a new tactic — the Special Attack Units. Young men, many barely out of their teens, were asked to deliberately crash their planes into Allied ships. From the Japanese perspective, this wasn’t seen as suicide in the way Western cultures understood it. It was framed as the ultimate act of loyalty and sacrifice for the Emperor and the nation. Many pilots wrote final letters home expressing pride, duty, and acceptance of their fate. One pilot famously wrote: “I will be a shield for His Majesty.” By the end of the war, nearly 4,000 Kamikaze pilots had died. While the tactic caused real damage to the U.S. Navy, it couldn’t change the outcome of the war.
