@fbasoulaanexpose: My argument isn’t that every form of body art is the same. Samoan tattoo traditions, Amazigh body markings, Indigenous American body painting, Arab body art traditions, and many African body-art traditions all have their own visual language, symbolism, placement, and history. What stands out to me about Elukami is that many of its modern designs follow a body-art flow that looks much closer to henna traditions than to historical indigo staining. Indigo-stained fingers are historically documented. The modern practice of creating intricate patterns across the hands, fingers, wrists, arms, and feet is a different thing. I’m not saying Black Americans can’t create new traditions. My point is that Elukami appears to be a modern body-art movement that draws inspiration from multiple sources, including jagua, but many examples also show obvious influence from established henna-style body art. Acknowledging that influence shouldn’t be controversial. The issue isn’t creativity. The issue is historical accuracy and giving credit to all the influences that helped shape the final aesthetic. #fba #soulaan #elukami #Èfílumum #ados

LotusFlowerBomb :
Elukami is an extension of west African henna using south American Jagua mixed with indigo powder or simply staining the hands with indigo dye instead of Henna, it’s our diasporic spin a tradition our Ancestors have lost with designs that are specific to our cultural upbringing.

That's not Elukami. You chose a specific company who uses henna in their work. bffr

Just for clarity of your thoughts: you would rather it is stained than designs from quilts, brick masonry, symbols that could hold ancestral meaning to someone?

Elukami is entirely it’s own thing. Traditionally done with indigo powders or dyes. The reason it resembles so closely is because African cultural practices did still exist and were adapted. It’s almost like enslaved people were Africans and their descendants are honoring them.

Most black Americans don’t even know what Elukami is. When they get this done they call it henna or mehndi. Elukami isn’t even a real thing tbh

😞 i just want yall to actually embrace being african instead of appropriating african culture and calling it something else ... that's literally what they did to cloud bob and boxer braids
