India Just Built a Jet Engine Only a Few Nations Can Make! India has achieved a major breakthrough in indigenous aerospace propulsion. DRDO’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) has successfully developed India’s first indigenous expendable turbojet engine in the 350 kg thrust class—a technology mastered by only a handful of countries. Designed to power cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, drones and other expendable platforms, the engine can reduce India’s dependence on foreign propulsion systems in strategically critical defence programmes. The achievement is not merely about assembling an engine. Turbojet technology demands exceptional precision, advanced metallurgy, high-temperature materials and strict manufacturing standards. Even a small error can affect performance, reliability and mission success. The engine was manufactured and assembled by Hyderabad-based Azad Engineering, DRDO’s industry partner, highlighting how cooperation between Indian laboratories and private industry can accelerate defence indigenisation. However, this should not be confused with developing a fighter-aircraft engine. It is an expendable engine meant for platforms such as missiles and drones—but mastering it still strengthens India’s technological base for more advanced propulsion programmes. From importing critical systems to designing and manufacturing them domestically, India is gradually building the foundations of genuine aerospace self-reliance. A small engine—but a massive leap for India’s defence capabilities. #DRDO #JetEngine #AatmanirbharBharat #DefenceTechnology #MakeInIndia [India first expendable turbojet engine, DRDO 350 kg thrust engine, GTRE jet engine, indigenous cruise missile engine, Azad Engineering DRDO, India aerospace propulsion technology, Indian defence manufacturing, UAV engine India, drone propulsion system, Aatmanirbhar Bharat defence]
