@trevinotravels: 500 years ago, the California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus) roamed the skies above the American Southwest and the West Coast. Their historic range stretched as far north as Vancouver and as far east as Texas. Cut to 40 years ago, and only 22 individuals remained in the entire world. Years of habitat loss, lead poisoning, and trash ingestion had pushed them to the brink of extinction. So, in 1987, they were all captured and since then it’s been a decades long fight to reintroduce them to the wild. Today, their population numbers 607 birds, with over 300 of those being spread over California as well as the Arizona-Utah border. It’s an inspiring story of human ingenuity and the condor’s resilience, but when you’re standing under a clear blue sky with 11 condors soaring overhead, the weight of that success hits you in a whole new way. This was truly one of the most magical moments of my life. As someone who has been a big fan of animals and conservation since I was a baby, seeing these majestic birds take to the skies brought me to tears. It just gives me hope that it’s not too late to fix things. That they can get better if we work together ❤️ #trevinotravels #grandcanyon #californiacondor #conservation #wildlifephotography

this is almost as powerful as seeing herds of Przewalski's horses with foals running wild in Asia. There were only 13 of them once, and now they number in the thousands!

This is a testament of the critical importance of traditional ecological knowledge and how it can inform our modern scientific practices. The Yurok Tribe of CA has been fundamental in the recovery of the California Condor—without their deep knowledge of the land, this would not have been possible.

There’s something so moving about humans saving species from the impact of their own. Conservationists are truly the best of humanity; may their work always continue on. 🥹🥹
