@iamwillatherton: The Dachshund might just be the most disrespected working dog on the planet. Because when most people see a Dachshund today, they see a cute little sausage dog. What they don't see is the fearless hunter the breed was originally designed to be. Dachshunds were bred in Germany to hunt badgers. In fact, the name literally translates to "badger dog." Think about that for a second. A dog weighing a few kilograms was expected to go underground, into dark tunnels, and confront an angry badger in its own den. That's why they're so determined. That's why they're so brave. And that's why they can be surprisingly stubborn. They weren't bred to sit quietly and wait for instructions. They were bred to work independently, solve problems and make decisions under pressure. Unfortunately, because they're small and adorable, many people underestimate them and fail to provide the structure, training and outlets they need. Underneath that long body and cute face is a tough little working dog with generations of hunting instincts behind it. And when you understand that, a lot of Dachshund behaviour suddenly makes much more sense.

It’s the most frustrating breed I’ve ever known because they are so so intelligent, sweet, loyal and loving but everyone who sees them thinks they’re barky and horrible. They never get to see the best of them. Their loss. I adore my baby.

Mine takes house defence very seriously. If he thinks there’s someone at the door he’ll bark until I take him to the front door to show him there’s not one there, and then he barks at the empty space to show it who’s boss. And I LOVE him for it!!

I try my hardest to steer people away from dachshunds if they’ve never had one. I adore them and have owned them for years but they’re not for most people

People regularly stop me on trails to say it’s “cruel” I take mine hiking. They roll their eyes when I point out they are a hunting breed and full of energy. This lil man is half mountain goat. He leaves me in the dust out there!

As a single lady living in apartment I chose a dachshund as my house dog for their amiable size (apartment) and bigger that size bark to ward off any unwanted guests. The amount of time I’ve had numerous people be surprised it’s just a weenie barking. Never once did I get mad for his bark he’s doing what I needed him to do.
