Babies swallow air while feeding, whether they're breastfed or bottle-fed. Many moms tell me they don't want to burp their baby because the baby has fallen asleep at the breast, and they're worried burping will wake them up. But here's the thing: when your baby burps, it creates more space in their tummy. That can make feeding more comfortable and help them settle better afterward. My recommendation: 🍼 Feed your baby. 🤱 If they fall asleep, gently place them on their tummy in the position shown in the video to help release trapped air. 💨 Let them burp—even if a little milk comes up, that's usually okay. 🍼 Then offer the breast or bottle again if they still want more. 😴 Once they've released the air, they're often able to fall into a deeper, more comfortable sleep. A sudden, intense, high-pitched scream can sometimes be a sign that trapped air is causing discomfort. Babies can go from calm to very upset quickly when gas gets stuck.
