Deep Impact has Morgan Freeman as a good president. But also I’m thinking about the latest Mission Impossible movie with Angela Bassett as president, the world is ending and she has to rely on Tom Cruise to save the world.

I think it’s done as a hopeful thing. To surprise the audiences of 1995. To remind them that we’re the good guys leading the world socially and morally. But it makes no sense in 2026.

I think the reason probably varies depending on who’s making the movie or show. In some cases I can see it being a hopeful/aspirational thing but it could also be stunt casting with a well known older actor like Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, etc.

recently I saw someone saying how post 9/11 shows and movies started putting POC in police and govt roles so that people would trust authority more if they lean left, and blame POC instead of white people if they lean right
