@yunggeeski: What if you bought Charizard instead of stocks? I compared $30 put into two things in 1999: A PSA 10 1st Edition Base Set Charizard vs. The S&P 500 using SPY Final result: Charizard: about $430,000 S&P 500: about $280 So yes, the orange dragon violated modern portfolio theory. But there is a massive catch. This chart is not saying “Pokémon cards are better than stocks.” It is showing what happens when one specific collectible becomes a cultural holy grail. The S&P 500 is diversified, liquid, scalable, and easy to buy. Charizard required you to pick the exact right card, in the exact right grade, keep it in perfect condition for decades, avoid selling during the dead years, avoid getting scammed, avoid damaging it, and somehow know that grown adults in 2026 would be fighting over cardboard like it was beachfront property. Also, this was not just any Charizard. This was the 1999 1st Edition Base Set Shadowless Charizard in PSA 10 condition — one of the most iconic Pokémon cards ever made. That matters because collectibles are brutally condition-dependent. A PSA 10 can be worth hundreds of thousands, while lower grades can be worth dramatically less. Same character. Same card art. Completely different financial universe. The S&P 500 quietly compounded. Charizard went through nostalgia, scarcity, grading culture, YouTube hype, celebrity buying, pandemic-era collectibles mania, and a full generational wealth transfer from kids who once begged their parents for booster packs. The funniest part is that both started at $30. One became lunch money with dividends. The other became a down payment. The S&P 500 built wealth.
Charizard used Flamethrower and became a mortgage application.

I kid you not, my mom threw it away. I was a child collecting to collect, not to play. Not for value, but just because I liked them. Charizard was(is) my fav, so i made sure i had it. It was mint. Saved money for the protectors and everything…just to be trashed 😬 she saved those darn beanie babies tho 😭😭😭😭

There was no 1st edition zard for 30 in 99. Sorry. I was 10 and paid $40 for a non 1st edition zard in 99. Everyone on the planet wanted that card in 1st print.

Charizard was never 30$. I’ve been a fan since indigo plateau days and the cheapest when they first came out was $150

I bought a random pack and got holographic Charizard, which I promptly sold for $20 to the store owner. I was like 10...and I really hate 10 year old me. If I hadn't opened the pack in the store, I probably would've never sold it. 🥲

If only we knew what’ll become valuable or not. My sister had an incredible Ty beanie baby collection back in the 90’s she was sure was gonna be worth millions. Lol, now they’re all worth $5 max, even the collectible ones only go for $20.

It wouldn’t have been only $30. You’d have to have it graded and sealed and all kinds of other crap to maintain it.

The cheapest I seen was 50 that’s when I sold one for 30 then another for 50. So sad that I had 7 different charizards and they went to the dump

it doesn't scale, you can put as much money in stocks as you like, you can't put as much money in Charizard cards as you like and at certain point is not that liquid to actually sell so this is kind of doesn't mean anything
