Sarah Hemmert :
Mormon funerals are not supposed to be focused on the person they are recruiting events.

The funerals are so uncomfortable because of this. And then they all take very happy smiley pictures in front of the coffin and post it all over social media. It’s weird.

I don't think that is universally true but yes, dwelling in darkness and sadness is just as performative and damaging. Just deal with life and keep moving forward

I’m not sure if it’s the same in southern Appalachia, but in northern Appalachia, we don’t hold bodies for almost a month to have the funeral? You either make it or you can’t. I think the longest I’ve ever gone between a death and funeral up north is MAYBE a week and that’s because the funeral homes had other funerals planned. When I moved to Texas, I was shocked that it’s normal to hold bodies 2 weeks and even up to 6 weeks. I’ve also been to SEVERAL funerals here where the families take pictures of their loved one in their casket. IIIIIIdk… that freaked me out.

the bishop is actually meant to make sure the funeral service is a "missionary opportunity". it really pissed me off when my husband's brother's funeral was all about the church and what a good missionary/member he was etc. he died from suicide, he was an atheist, and everyone was just focusing on when he was a member, like, the old him. when his widow didn't feel up to talking, she asked my husband to do so for her. he talked about the real Jason, the one we knew and loved. I'm glad he got to do that.

the last minute of this video is 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯 spot on. the rest is too, but the "til death" nonsense never made sense to me when I was in but it was *the* *thing* that they told us differentiated us from other religions. it just always seemed like something they took out of context and rolled with it.

Nothing made (and skill makes) me more enraged than my Mormon mom’s happy mask after my dad suddenly dropped dead 4 years ago. She didn’t want us to wear black to the funeral. I was like, this is the blackest day of our life of course I’m going to look like I’m mourning because I’m mourning the worst thing that’s ever happened to all of us, wtf. It makes me CRAZY.

My memory of childhood Mormon funerals is no one wears black (aside from usual men’s black suits). Women just wore their regular Sunday dresses. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I learned that’s a real thing not just on tv shows.

whenever I got upset or angry my mom would dismiss my feelings and tell me it was just "Satan causing contention." 😐 also my brother and I have both since stepped away from the church my brother and I made sure to go against the Mormon traditional funeral and when my dad died we made sure to have an open mic and have the people there share stories of my dad instead of just talking Jesus the whole time. the bishop sure as hell didn't like it and forced us to have the funeral in a small room instead of the main hall but he can suck an egg.

Christian funerals work like that too. They just gloss over it and praise Jesus.
