Jurors heard a lot about attorney Aaron Bregman during the punitive damages phase of the Iskanders' wrongful death trial against Rebecca Grossman and Scott Erickson. Bregman is an attorney in Sherman Oaks, California, who is close friends with Rebecca's husband, Peter Grossman, and he is the trustee for Grossman's brother's trust. Peter Grossman took a loan from his brother's trust, and the Iskanders' lawyer Brian Panish questioned him about that while implying Bregman conspired with Grossman against his brother's best interests. Panish also questioned Grossman about $199,400 he transferred to Bregman's family trust, which Grossman testified he does not remember. "Were you lending him the money?" Panish asked. "I do not know what this is for, sir," Bregman answered. Panish asked if Grossman frequently makes "$200,000 transfers that you don't know about within the last several years?" "Sir, there is an extraordinary amount of legal fees that were paid over the last several years," Grossman said. Judge Huey Cotton intervened. "Don't inject things that you're just making up. If you don't know that this is the legal fees, don't say it," the judge told Grossman. "Yeah, you don't even know it's for. How could you say that?" Panish asked. "Your question was asking me if is it my common practice to not know what's going on, and I'm trying to give you my best answers," Grossman answered. "It's a yes or no, sir. Do you often transfer out $200,000 that two years later you can't tell someone what it was for? Yes or no?" Panish asked. "I can't answer that, yes or no, sir," Grossman answered. "So you don't know?" Panish asked. "I can't answer that, yes or no, sir," Grossman answered. "So either you know or you don't know. Do you know or not know?" Panish asked. "You're placing me in a position where a yes or no is not an answer. I'm happy to answer the question for you, sir, but you can't pigeonhole me into yes or no," Grossman answered. "Why did you pay Aaron Bregman $199,400 three years .... more than two years after the death of the Iskander boys?" Panish asked. "This is the first I've seen this document, sir. I don't know the answer to that question, sir," Grossman answered. "You produced this document, didn't you, sir?" Panish asked. "I did not see the document, sir," Grosman answered. "So, in other words, whatever documents were produced, you didn't review them to make sure that all of them were being produced, correct?" Panish asked. "That is correct," Grosman answered. "Okay, and you understand you have an obligation to review, signed under penalty of perjury, and say you produce all the documents, and if you can't either you have to say they're lost, destroyed, misplaced, right?"
