@cogito.rebellion: part 393 | why?? read on. being surprised by life is the strangest habit we have. the stoic argument underneath this line is precise. the world has a nature. it operates according to that nature consistently and without exception. change happens. loss happens. people disappoint. plans collapse. bodies fail. empires decay. none of this is aberrant. all of it is exactly what the world does, reliably, in every age, without variation. to be surprised by it is to have been paying insufficient attention. book 8 of the meditations makes the same point with a different image: just as it makes no sense to be surprised by a fig tree producing figs, the same applies to the world producing what it does. a doctor should not be surprised by fever. a sailor should not be surprised by wind. and a human being should not be surprised by the ordinary operations of human life. what this cuts against is the quiet assumption most people carry: that difficulty is an interruption to life rather than a feature of it. that the default state is smooth, and disruption is the exception. marcus is saying this assumption is wrong, and that holding it guarantees suffering every time reality behaves like reality. the alternative is not pessimism. it is accuracy. a person who has genuinely accepted what the world is like is not hardened or resigned. they are simply no longer spending energy being shocked by it. who was marcus aurelius? marcus aurelius ruled the roman empire from 161 to 180 ad. the meditations were his private journals, never intended for publication, written in greek on military campaign. they survive by chance and are one of the most direct windows into a practising stoic mind ever produced. he died in 180 ad, still on the northern frontier. #marcusaurelius #philosophy #darkacademiaaesthetic #stoicism #dailyquotes
