What looks complex at full speed is actually built from a handful of simple ideas repeated over and over. Curved lines create the rolling hills. Cross contour lines become rows of crops wrapping over the terrain. Small trees and shrubs establish scale. Line weight creates depth. One of the biggest surprises for artists is realizing that experienced artists aren’t necessarily drawing different things. They’re just making decisions faster because they’ve practiced the fundamentals enough times that they become automatic. That’s one of the main goals of the drills. Better line control. Faster decision making. Stronger forms. More confidence with every mark. The more comfortable you become with the building blocks of drawing, the faster and more enjoyable the entire process becomes.
