The difference is that the parents are paying insane amounts of money, time, and energy just to have their child pulled at the last minute to secure a win. Travel time, hotel reservations, food costs, countless hours prepping for a comp just to have a kid pulled at the 11th hour is crazy. Other sports don’t have quite the same commitment. I don’t know if you already do, but if that’s the culture you want to have, make it known in advance. I wouldn’t sign up to spend $10k+ per year knowing you might pull my kid at the last second.

Let me be clear, I ABSOLUTELY support a Coach’s decision to pull kids off the mat. But it’s apples and oranges. Are you pulling an athlete or replacing an athlete? Because you can’t play football without a QB. And there’s always a back up. Also, are you pulling an athlete at “game time” or a week before the comp? Had a conversation been had prior to pulling them warning that they could be pulled or are you just saying a day before the comp, “Sorry, you’re out”. If you’re doing it correctly, then there shouldn’t be any drama.

We got to nationals and for some reason I couldn’t throw my back handspring so guess what happened? I didn’t compete. I sat on the sidelines with my coach and cheered on my team. No tears, no attitude.

So true! I use other sports as examples all the time. No football coach would ever let a kid continue to play if they were late back to the game after halftime…. If it was my cheerleader they would sit. But I would be the bad guy. 🤷♀️

If you’re putting all this money to expect performing then you’re doing it for the wrong reason. It’s a sport. Tough decisions will be made for what’s best for the team.

My daughter is still the only cheerleader to become a UCA Cheer Coach from her days of cheering up until now. You can imagine the jealousy she went through. Thank you for being the coach those girls needed.
