@elysebh_diyaccountsclub: Can HMRC see my Vinted Income? If you earn over £1700 or sell 30 items in a tax year, they will have to report that back to HMRC. But it doesn’t necessarily follow that you need to file a tax return - if you sell personal items on Vinted and are not running a business, then you won’t need to file a return. But if you are trading, and running a reselling business, then you will need to file a tax return if your total self employed income is above £1000 within the tax year. #HMRC #PersonalTax #SelfAssessment #reselling #VintedReseller

So you sell your old clothes that you’ve already paid tax on (VAT) and you pay tax on it … you are losing money it’s not an income!

You can sell your own clothes. You paid tax on them when you purchased them, they are yours to sell.

You can sell your own clothes that you no longer want or no longer fit. That’s not profit, that’s just selling them on, often at a loss.

People don’t understand that if you’re selling you’re own stuff that you’ve already bought it’s not for profit 😂 it’s only resellers

this matters ONLY if you are making a profit. you pay tax on the profit only. this is why it's complicated. you need to keep track of how much you purchased the item for orginally. if you purchased for £10. and sold for £5. you made a loss, you don't pay tax on that. if you purchased for £10. and sold for £20. you're profit is £10. you pay taxes on £10. minus your overhead - shipping, cost of packaging, etc. it's not straightforward. If they want you to pay tax on everything - that's not the way it works! it's essentially retail. You operate like a retail business.

I don’t understand if you’re selling your own product that you pay tax on when you bought it and a couple years later you no longer want it but then you sell it. You could pretend you have to pay tax. Is that what you’re saying?

It's not a profit tax, it's just another tax invented to support state expenses.

People still can’t understand ? If you are selling items at a loss you don’t pay tax on it because it’s not profit.

there's a big difference in earnt & what the product sold for....most sell their old clothes for a loss. does that go against my tax returns?

We're now in this ridiculous situation where you can buy something from a charity shop, get it home and find that it doesn't look good with your home decor, but if you decide to sell it on, HMRC can look at that as earned income. So instead, you have to keep hold of things you don't want for several years, before you can sell it on without paying tax on it.
