Heartbroken is a understatement but I expected the worst while hoping for the best 💔 If a young Black man like Karmelo Anthony — raised in an affluent neighborhood, supported by loving parents, carrying a 3.7 GPA, and serving as a football team captain — can be convicted of murder in a clear case of self defense by a jury where no one looked like him, what does that tell us about the state of our country and justice system? He was the complete opposite of the sterotypes they label young Black men and it didn't matter. What does it tell us about the importance of electing BLACK judges who understand our communities? What does it tell us about the consequences when Black people are underrepresented in jury pools because too many of us avoid jury duty? Who sits on the bench matters. Who sits in the jury box matters. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: our judicial system is not “broken.” Too often, it functions exactly as it was designed. The disparities in how Black people, especially young Black men, are treated compared to others are impossible to ignore until you're a racist pos. Many in our community look at case after case and see a painful pattern. They see situations where others receive the benefit of the doubt, while Black youth are denied the same grace, understanding, or presumption of innocence. Whether you agree or disagree with a particular verdict, that perception didn’t come from nowhere—it was built over generations of unequal treatment under the law. We have to do what we've ALWAYS done as a people and turn our PAIN into ACTION. Y'all mad enough yet? Vote in November. Pay attention to judicial races. Vote in District Attorneys and Judges who look like us. Sacrifice and show up for jury duty.
