The thing is, we need soil biologists and other niche workers. I think there’s something wrong with the system rather than the degree taken.

I have a BS in Soil Science and I make more than enough money. It’s all where you live.

Don't want to move? Then research your city and find the jobs to train there. That's what i did - I checked wages, benefits and future expectations - then i went to school.

I think it’s more about finding the middle ground. Follow your passion, but do your research and find a good paying job that’s closest to it.

Any different posts she said that she did not want to move for work. That is most likely what is holding her back!

There are soil biology jobs, but you have to be willing to move to the farmland to get to them.

That’s BS advice. Study and learn what you need to do to get the job that pays the most to do the thing you hate the least. Follow your passion after 5pm.

I think if she really searched it out, you could find a really good job and be a consultant. For instance, in the central Valley of California, where all the almonds are and peaches and any form, they would love for you to figure out how to make their crops better and how to make their soil better. I’ve always taught my kids to go after big jobs that make big money. You can enjoy your life after work and follow your dreams when you have the money to do so.

PhDs in Niche sciences usually find work in their Doctoral path. That Research dissertation work is the work. You teach and get govt grants to fund your research.

Honestly, it depends on the passion. My daughter is 12 and is an open water scuba diver. After this weekend, she will be have the Advanced Diver title with SSI (Scuba School International). She has a goal of being a Master diver (50+ dives and many specialized classes) before she is 16. Her goal is to be a marine biologist, and she wants to look into underwater welding. Both are specialized jobs that not everyone can have. Diving is her passion, and she can get a very good job with it. She is also a competitive swimmer and a mermaid. Swim and scuba will help with the college, while mermaiding and scuba will be a decent paying job.
