Beta-glucan is a soluble fibre found naturally in oats. When sufficiently hydrated, it can form a viscous mixture in the digestive tract. Its effects depend on the dose, molecular structure, processing method and the meal it’s eaten in. Some human studies suggest that oatmeal may increase subjective fullness. In one randomised crossover trial involving 48 adults, instant oatmeal increased fullness and reduced energy intake at the following meal compared with an oat-based ready-to-eat cereal. That result applies to the specific breakfasts tested and doesn’t mean every bowl of oats will affect everyone’s appetite in the same way. The more established finding concerns cholesterol: EFSA concluded that 3 g of oat beta-glucan per day contributes to maintaining normal blood cholesterol concentrations. That is a daily beta-glucan amount, not a universal serving recommendation. For breakfast, I still prefer the uncomplicated version: oats cooked with milk, then finished with fruit and seeds. Useful food, without asking it to perform miracles. How do you make your breakfast? Follow to learn more about our daily food! Sources: EFSA Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies.
