I saved almost 15k last year when we decided to stop going out to eat weekly. We go out about once a month. I also dialed in our grocery’s so that wasn’t just going out. And we still live well and do what we want within reason.

I stopped grocery shopping every week, always had to shop new sales. Now I’ll go 2-3 weeks, buy what’s on my list and staples. I’ll look at sales when I go for things I’ll use. Much less waste and savings.

We never ate out while we were paying off debt. After we paid it all off (inc house) we had so much disposable income, we started eating out a lot. We really put on a bunch of weight- you can literally see the thinnest we ever were was when we never ate out… now (2026) it’s so expensive, we only eat out socially a couple times a month- we usually just share something, and tip well

I was telling my teenage son the other day that when I was growing up, eating out, fast food or casual dining was a very rare treat. Just a few times a year and he was in absolute shock. Families now are eating out several times a week.

We rarely go out to eat, last month we went out twice only because we had gift cards (deep cleaning my house) this month? No plans. Next month we are taking a trip so i expect lots of out to eat with family (free breakfast at the hotel)

And now over here where we are at a restaraunt they charge 30 dolllars if we sit with a group for tip that was one place and each group payed that amount if we sat separate then it would be less that is insane.

We only go out to eat on vacation. We go big on vacation, but we don’t eat out the rest of the year. We are boring frugal people. 😉

I cook every night because we live in a very small town. Grocery store is either 30 minutes or more away depending on where I go. We have restaurants around us that’s 5ish minutes away but they are mediocre or too expensive. I would much rather make my own food. We might go out with friends every other month and it’s just too expensive.

Good advice!. It’s just my husband and I now and dinner with friends is our social life, which is important to us. Economizing for us looks a little different. Sometimes we eat dinner at home and split an appetizer when it’s an outdoor place with a band. We have a couple adult drinks, but then we switch to water. We so enjoy doing this. These are decisions that we all must weigh out and decide if it’s worth it.

My family enjoys going out to eat at least once as a date night and once as a family. It is pricey but we don’t go to concerts, haven’t had on a vacation in about 10 years- randomly go to movies- I’ve already saved more than enough money and that’s cuz investments haven’t kicked in, social security hasn’t been applied for, and my business rental is providing more than enough monthly income- we’re enjoying ourselves at least twice a week

this is so true! my daughter is about to start Emory in the Fall...she got a huge scholarship but our portion is still $27k. This is so helpful! People just understand it all adds up
