@meghannmcuniff: Scott Erickson's lawyer Deborah Tropp told jurors in her closing argument today that the retired Major League Baseball pitcher's net worth is "approximately $1.2 million." "Defendant's financial condition here provides an independent basis for zero or something minimal. The $176 million verdict made its point, and that is something these defendants are going to have to deal with. Based on his monetary situation, we would ask for a nominal or minimal amount of punitives, should you feel it necessary, as you more likely will, to deter or deal with the unconscious behavior," said Tropp, a partner at McNeil Tropp & Braun LLP in Newport Beach. She said Erickson "came here and showed remorse during the punitive damages phase, which is the only time he was allowed to do that."She played video excerpts of his testimony in which he said he feels "terrible about what's happened." "I feel really bad about my actions and some of the terrible behavior I did, and not being very honest, no words can describe how I feel about what's happened. For six years, there's not a day gone by that I have not been sad and upset and wish I would have done something different. I truly believe that now than if I would have somehow been able to stop, I probably saved their lives. That's a hard thing to live with," Erickson testified. "We ask you to take all of that evidence, all of his remorse and his apology, as well as his financial current condition, into serious contemplation when you are answering this verdict form.
