@korabidrizi: You learned collectivist values at home and got competing ones at school and in the community. It’s no surprise you always felt conflicted. #albanian #kosova #diaspora #culture #psychology
As a 2nd gen immigrant it can be so difficult to do things independently and for yourself, because it feels as if you’re sort of betraying your parents who gave up so much to have you be successful. At the same time it can be limiting when they are so collectivist and maintain the idea that we need to keep doing things as a family or asking for very large/difficult favours from their children. Its so tough because we are indebted to our parents for life, but especially diaspora kids feel worse about it because we have to do things that our parents don’t understand. (Uni/ moving out to name a few)

Yes it is really isolating when you’re younger feeling like this but as you age you just accept you don’t fit anywhere and that’s okay

I took a culture & psychopathology class in college and took a lot away from it specifically because of my family background! Was super interesting. It plays out in so many parts of life

I’m a first generation American with an Albanian father and Belarusian mother. This resonates so much.

Yep, same experience. I do love how strong the relationships are of Albanians. There is something beautiful about that bond

i’m not sure how anyone could guess otherwise unless that person doesn’t know what collectivism is, i would have assumed albania is lower than 27 😂😂 both albania and Kosovo were shaped by their socialist and communist regimes, its not surprising

As an albanian, who was born and grew up in Albania but living in diaspora, i personally do not relate to this result. I always felt different, probably this was a problem to fit in.

This is such an important point for Albanians in the diaspora to understand, thank you for shedding light on this topic 👏

Yes!! I learned this in my international business classes. It’s so interesting to see how we adapt in individualistic countries

I started following you yesterday. I’m glad you came across my fyp! As a 50yr old woman born in the US, with an 🇦🇱 father and a 🇮🇹🇺🇸 Mom, the identity crisis was real in my late teens and early twenties. I was raised within the culture as it remained in NY, yet I felt like I didn’t fully belong. However I never felt like I fit into the American mold either. I tried looking into research like yours years back and it wasn’t readily available. I’m glad that you and others of your generation are utilizing this platform to help give us validation and healing, so thank you! 🫶🏼
