Why elite pitchers raise their hands overhead. It's an old school move. But it has two very specific purposes. The first is rhythm. Starting from a standstill is hard. The hands overhead move frees up the upper half and establishes tempo before the delivery ever starts. Everything compounds from there. The second is positioning. As the hands come down and meet the lead knee during leg lift, the system loads into flexion. Ribcage compresses. T-spine rounds. Pelvis tucks. This sets the body up for the linear move, upper and lower half. Specifically, holding flexion allows the t-spine to extend late, when it actually matters. You can't go where you already are. Start in flexion. Use extension later. Leiter, Perez, and Scherzer all use this move and while it might look slightly different, with different tempos and styles, the underlying purpose is the same.
