My mom was a second grade teacher when we were growing up. She used to thank tattle tales and tell them that the info was so important and make them write everything down. Then she’d sit down with them and correct their grammar, spelling, and vocab. They learned fast that it was more annoying to tattle. Malicious compliance!

I worked with kids for a long time and have my own. I view "tattling" as needing help with a problem. Kids don't know. When mine comes to "tattle" my response is "What do you think should happen next?" which usually opens the door for either "well I don't want him to get hurt" OR "I think maybe I can tell him that's bothering me?" To raise problem solvers, we have to help them through even the small problems.

We would play “tattling or not tattling” in the car with my mom. She would give us a scenario and then we would answer tattling or not tattling. It felt like a game show and we loved playing it lol

Why is no one talking about Guiding Cooperative Kids by Rachel Thomas? It completely changed how I react to my kids and why they behave the way they do.

I say to my kids, “are you tattling or do you need my help?”. It does make them stop and think.

No because why are we training little kids to “find and tell an adult” when they’re being frustrated and then be like “well now you’re tattling and that’s bad” like that’s not the most confusing thing ever?? I’m glad your mom had a nice way of working it out! Sounds like she had your best interest in mind🫶🏻✨

We have a tattle notebook. They can go write it down anytime they want. At the end of the day we recap and it usually just turns into giggles. I was DYING in tattletale hell. Its lessened it significantly.

I hate this idea of calling children “tattle tales.“ It sends the wrong message and as a kid it’s like telling a kid to not bother you at all when they might just feel like they need to be heard

Kids have no concept of “real” or “adult-level” problems so when parents dismiss their problem as “not a real problem” you are not assuring them, you’re silently teaching them to ignore scenarios that require them to speak up. Of course it can be unlearned in adult hood but you’re basically setting them back a little

I love this AND I will add, “are you telling me because you want help figuring out how to handle the situation,” bc I recognized my kids are sometimes just trying to understand what to do and they don’t have the tools yet to know what the options are.

lmao not in my house. my tattling was highly appreciated and never discouraged, if anything, highly encouraged. I think your mom had a favorite kid she didnt want getting in trouble so that was her way of dealing with it ngl.

my dad didn't necessarily "discourage" tattling but he taught me and my brothers that we are a TEAM and should have each other's backs, we shouldn't be trying to get each other in trouble

I’ve realized, they tattle because the adult made the rules for playing together. The less rules from adults the more they sort it out for themselves. If an offence happens I just tell mine to stop playing with them until they say sorry/ make it right. I rarely have to do that.

I work with small children and I always say. "Oh, I saw/heard them, but thanks for letting me know." usually they did the same thing. 90% of time its to get the other in trouble. so i add "i saw/heard you do it too.. do you want to be punished together." they always say no, and telling slows down for the day.

Yes I don’t like the “don’t tattle tell” bc too many kids are sneaky and I want my kid to feel comfortable telling me anything! Like my 4 yo telling me my nephew exposed himself to him !!! I’m glad he felt comfortable telling me bc my nephew told him to keep a secret

I just say "Did you tell them to stop? Did they do it intentionally or was it an accident? Did they apologize?" and leave it at that. I teach my kids to work out their problems by communication.
