@drwilloughjenkins: What Teens Have Told Me Who Have a Great Relationship With Their Mom 1. "We laugh about dumb stuff." It's not always deep talks that build connection. Sometimes it's shared laughter that says, I like being around you. 2. "We have fun together." They have traditions like thrift shopping or late-night drives that just feel relaxed, easy, and fun. 3. "She talks to me like a real person." She asks what I think about things. Feeling heard makes teens want to share more. 4. "She doesn't give advice unless I ask." She listens first. Sometimes the best way to help is to hold space instead of jumping in. 5. "When I failed a test, she didn't say I told you so." She just said that was rough and offered to help next time. That builds trust, not fear. 6. "She trusts me and assumes the best." If I forget something, she doesn't assume I'm lazy. She gives grace. 7. "She gives me space but still has rules." Freedom feels safe when boundaries come from care, not control. 8. "She apologizes." When moms say, I shouldn't have yelled, it teaches how to repair instead of walk away. 9. "She doesn't tell everyone my business." Keeping their confidence builds respect and openness. 10. "She believes in me." Some parents bring kids down, but when a mom believes her teen can soar, even if she's the only one, it changes everything. #parentingtips #parentingteens #parentingsupport #parenting #motherdaughter

I did all this with my daughter and we are incredibly close now she’s a young adult. However, my teenage step daughter just came to live with us. She has trauma from her biological mother and I have had no success trying to bond with her. It feels like one step forward two steps back. It’s been over a year. Any advice would be amazing.

As a grandmother of almost 70, I realize how having a mother who did none of these things broke me. Took me years to unlearn those negative behaviors. I see my daughter with my granddaughter and know the cycle can be broken.

the day I knew i was doing a good job was the day my daughter had her friend over, and my daughter shared with me, something embarrassing that happened at school. after we talked about it, I left the room, and I overheard her friend say "you told your mom?" my daughter replied "I tell my mom everything! don't you?" 😭😭😭

I feel like I do this with my teen daughter. But this just opened my eyes why no matter how much I try to build a deep relationship with my mom, it just doesn’t work bc I didn’t get majority of this growing up. My mom is amazing and did what she needed to do but we don’t have a bond that I see others have.

This is how I raised my daughter who is so self confident and happy. She’s a mother now and has shared this meant so much to her. Now we are close friends too.

I had this with my eldest daughter and we are also very close. She is an adult &married now but the bond &love is still strong. After her I had 5 sons it's different with boys. Still working on this. Also blessed with another daughter she is a tween now Gen Alpha this was also different but laughing listening & love is still the order of the day & we have a unique bond. The years of experience and life lessons has made me a better mom to her & her twin brother. I'm much more patient, understanding forgiving accepting and don't feel the need to be in control, parenting is much easier when you are relaxed peaceful & serene. 🕊️🫶🏻💕

Thank you for sharing this. I have two teenage girls I’m trying to be the best for, and constantly find myself needing reminders to be better. I try to be as supportive as possible but know I can always grow better and better as a mother and they truly deserve it.

My dad did all of this for me. I did not have a clue relationship with my mom so I viewed to be a parent like him. I have two daughters and a have had so much fun together while they are growing up. However, I still find myself wanting this fun my mom.

Being open. When my grandma would listen with an open mind instead of judging me immediately and then give advice on the situation from her experience. And I’d say 95% of the time she was right.
