@dripthreadss: Those who were charged rent immediately after turning 18, what's your relationship with your parents like now? . . #redditstorytime #askreddit #redditreadings
I think the best method is what the dad did in the beginning where you’re doing courses to improve your future no rent is needed If you choose to work then charging a reasonable amount is fair especially you should be giving the money back when they leave.

First story makes no sense...💀Why would you ask for the rent if you dont need the money. That money could be more useful for the child during the saving for his own home...

Number 1 is the ONLY acceptable one. And it only works if that "rent" is not half the child's paycheck, especially if you're making them pay for other stuff for themselves like I was (shower products, clothes, washing machine products, etc). Most children at 18 don't have a job that will support paying for rent and extra things each month, and they shouldn't have to.

When I turned 18 I paid $200 a fortnight to my mum to share a room with my younger sister. I didn't mind as I had done it my entire life, and I knew money was tight. That extra $200 a fortnight meant all my siblings had a hot meal every night, rather than every other. I moved out at 19 with my now husband and I still send my mum $100 or $200 every so often, she doesn't use online banking so she's always happily surprised to see she has extra at the end of the month, thinking she spent under budget. She'll ring me and happily tell me about how she had extra money this month so the girls got a proper haircut or they had a nicer meat for dinner ect. I think if you're an adult, and you're working whilst living under your parents roof, you should pay something. even if it's a phone bill or TV streaming services.

W for the 1st father especially with him returning the money. Slight bit of tough love but still teaching responsibility and being able to surprise his kid with a nice gesture. 👏

The correct parenting action is to charge rent and save it all to give to them when they buy thier own home

Wanted 1/2 my paycheck plus bills in 2000 they tried to charge $300 a week, I moved out and hardly see them, meanwhile my siblings got support.

Number 1 is what I’m doing with my daughters but it’s once they’re done with high school and kinda after summer break but once college semester starts it’s either school or rent

I personally think that if they are working full time and not in any form of eduction then asking a small amount of “rent” is understandable it teaches responsibility and how to budget for when they move out independently. I’m not talking about at the age of 18 that’s a bit harsh, but generally if you are working full time I think you should contribute to costs of running the home. If the parents are financially able then they can put that money away to give back when they move out or whatever but I don’t inherently think that being charged a small amount of rent if you are an adult working full time is a bad thing.

My mum took most of my wages when I was 17 and when I quit my job to focus on school she complained she was broke so I quit school and got another job. Absolutely hated it and moved out so I could go back to school again.

My mum never actually asked for rent. She just asked me to contribute to the bills. I can’t remember how much I was paying her as this was years ago but I know it was less than what I was paying for a crappy flat. Moved back recently and as I still had to pay for the flat (tenancy hadn’t ended yet) I could t afford much and she let me pay what I could
