My son had a few friends who’s parents struggled. One in particular said he could sleep over and the kid said they don’t have much for food so he might want to bring a snack. They had 5 kids so I went to Walmart got a cart of groceries and some sodas etc and delivered them when I dropped my kid off. The parents cried. We are in this shit together people. If we can’t help each other then what’s the point?

When I was 8 another mom in my Girl Scout troop was driving me home from a trip a few hours away. The family stopped at McDonald’s for dinner. I told them I wanted a happy meal. She asked if my mom gave me money. I said no. She said I couldn’t get anything then. I sat there while they ate dinner and remember it 28 years later.

When I was in middle school my best friends family was low income and my mom took me Jean shopping one day and she tagged along and it was when miss me jeans were all the rage and she just tried on some for fun but my mom bought her a pair it took me a long time to realize that my mom did that bc she knew her mom couldn’t afford them and she didn’t want my bestie to go without or feel left out and that’s the mom I aspire to be one day too. Everyone will be included and splurged on if we can afford it.

I grew up poor. My best friend did not. Her parents paid for me to go on two spring breaks with them. Never asked my parents for a dime because they knew I wouldn’t be able to go if they did.

I went to a movie theater with a friend from middle school and her family and I was literally five cents short to buy popcorn and her mother and father looked at me and said too bad sweetheart. The cashier was shocked and told me it was all set and covered the five cents. I never hung out with her again after that.

When I was a kid my best friends parents did SO much for me and I don’t think I realized the gravity of it til I became an adult. There were years they “accidentally bought duplicate school clothes” so I’d have things to wear and fit in. They took me on vacations and literally MADE my summers

I grew up low-income and our freshman year of high school a friend and I went homecoming dress shopping. I was there just to look and be a supportive friend because I didn’t have money. Her mom bought both of us dresses 😭

We took my sons friend with us to a baseball game. My son wanted a signed jersey… guess who else got one! If I have other kids with me, in my care, I treat them exactly like I do my kids. Period.

Grew up with a single mom who always struggled financially since we had so many hardships in life. She just never caught a break. I will never forget my bestfriend in high school who would pay for my food or small outing fees so I can be there and spend time with friends without feeling left out (her parents made good money & truly were the sweetest).
