The Gaokao is China’s national university entrance exam and is widely regarded as the country’s most important academic test. This year’s exams took place from June 7–10. Aside from waiting outside exam centres, many families also take part in long-standing Gaokao traditions. Many mothers will wear qipao’s as the character “旗” (qí) sounds similar to the phrase “旗开得胜”(qíkāi-déshèng), a wish for success from the very beginning. Red clothing is also popular, while sunflowers are often given to students as a symbol of good luck and achievement.
