Junko Furuta was a 17-year-old Japanese high school student who was kidnapped, held captive, and subjected to 44 days of unimaginable torture and sexual assault by four teenage boys in Tokyo, Japan, in late 1988 and early 1989.The systemic and horrific abuse she suffered included:Severe Physical Beatings & Abuse: She was routinely beaten, burned with cigarettes and lighters, and used as a "human punching bag." Her captors burned her eyelids with candles and hot wax, pierced her breasts, and pulled off her left nipple.The Final Assault: Before her death, she was set on fire, had boiling water poured on her, and endured repeated strikes to the head.When she finally succumbed to her injuries, the perpetrators disposed of her body in a 55-gallon steel drum filled with concrete and dumped it in an industrial area in Tokyo.Her tragic ordeal and the systemic failures of the justice system in handling her juvenile attackers have been widely discussed and documented in true crime literature.
