The USN Ford carrier can’t have F35C either, I read it was partially to do with needing an onboard facility for stealth coating repair. It’s being added to all US carriers as they go through refits. So their oldest carrier now carriers F35C but the newer doesn’t. Could be part of the issue here too.

of course the important factor is we don't have F35b and have no plans to purchase 😁.

If we're talking about just the deck coating itself, there's so much that goes into it. It would be the cost of upkeep, how often would it have to be applied, is the coating able to withstand the environments that the LHD operates in. Who is qualified to apply it, cost to qualify personnel or contractors. cost of the initial lay is one thing but the ongoing cost, is it worth it?

the real difference is not between operating fixed wing or not , rather operating everything else Vs the f35B.
The Cavour carrier went through extensive modification to transition from av8B to 35B. Elevator maximum weight is a factor (a 35 weights double as a av8B),as is coating and maintainance facilities.

I was told the ski was gutted and wouldn’t hold up to a f-35 taking off

I’ve been asked why don’t we have F-35B I said because the Alpha is better but we should get the F35B! Why? Because they look cool seriously

do you think we the expansion of the RAN we are seeing it would be a good investment to acquire actual carriers like the Queen Elizabeth Class? I think it would make sense for an island nation to have this capability.

I’m fairly certain it’s the deck materials and density being able to withstand the heat/blast of the F35 jet. And to nitpick, STOVL is technically possible on a Canberra - if it were a v22 Osprey

As well as getting the Mogami class Frigates from Japan, we should look at their Izumo class “Destroyers”

I talked with a few navy engineers who were assigned to the HMAS Canberra. They confirmed the main structure is the same as Juan Carlos, and it's really just the deck coating + hoses.

hangar space for the f35s could hamper amphibious landing force capacity?? not saying it wouldn’t offer benefits but it definitely is a consideration. still a big fan of the idea to modify them for such ops :)

Surely it is deliberately obfuscated so that we have the capability without officially having the capability to project power in this way.

The Abbott government commissioned a review to have the Canberra Class take F-35Bs. The requirements where additional radar, refueling points on deck are for helicopters and weapons elevators are lacking. Deck coatings were another issue as well

They had the deck de-rated when they purchased it. The irony is it cost more to get the deck de-rated🤦♂️

If i remember correctly the F35 has been known to melt the landing surfaces if they try to land on the area that aren’t coated with a certain material

I’ve heard our maritime force even just our defence for is like a boutique force has a few fancy things but in limited usefulness capacity this is why island nations really have to think twice before signing defence agreements outside United States backing us we may aswell have nothing Eg f35 half the time there in maintence so operation ready we would struggle to even have 45 in the air over such a large space 1 carrier group of from say china would outnumber the maybe 10 jets we could have in qld whilst the others are spread out n that’s if none have been taken out china would almost have uncontested waters around us our ships can only defend against mild saturated attacks . Subs r getting real end of life the shark drone is cool but only 3 n they have to surface for communication so they could be a danger but err not much there is only 2-3 actually in service and instead of building our own stockpiles we started manufacturing again but land to LAND missiles capable ones at that but not air to air or air to ground or even ship sinkers like billions going out the door every year n even if we did have a war with say chine our oil and stockpiles from America come straight through china missle range so we have 3 weeks n we r completely shutdown in every way
