@shanzuli: I also work in hospitality in America and can confirm that our training for hospitality is very extensive and we put a lot of emphasis on experience for guests and tourism. It’s important to be kind!#greece#tourism#greek#europeans#hospitality

As a person with family in the US but who grew up in Europe; when you think you’re being nice, you are often perceived as very fake as the american politeness is almost antithetical to european politeness. Also most europeans don’t appreciate asking questions as a kind small talk and will think you are kind of dumb as you seem like you can’t figure it out yourself (or most small talk in general to be frank, it is often seen as fake and surface level). American communication style just tends to irritate a lot of europeans and will make you be seen a little bit simple.

And here is me, who couldn't cope with American customer service, especially in restaurants, I found it genuinely annoying and it made me want to eat as quickly as possible and leave 😅

Different cultures behave in different ways. What is rude in your culture isn’t considered rude in another culture. And what isn’t considered rude to you, very often is in other cultures. Ideally travelling teaches you this.

It depends on the question, if it’s stupid they will be “rude” because you are wasting their time. Plus, your idea of “being nice” is usually perceived as fake and annoying. Quit the useless small talk and go straight to the point.

US politeness and certain Europe politeness are almost opposite at times so they might think your equally being rude but really both are doing there version of polite ‘lemme get a’ verses ‘please may I have - if possible’ for ordering being an obvious one but little things like that

I’m a US citizen living in Portugal w/ my family of 4 & don’t experience this. We recently were in Greece w/ our dog & everyone was so nice in both Athens & Crete. Food was great, we were able to take our dog alot of places, people were friendly - even the 6am ravers heading home were friendly & played with our dog.🤷🏻‍♀️

I want to point out that I’m very thankful to be in Europe and Greece is beautiful. There have been some nice people as well just very few. This is just my experience and I know sometimes we have different experiences.

Tourists don’t have to make TikTok’s every 5 minutes comparing US to every European country available. It almost like no one wants to adapt to the different way people do things

Europe doesn’t think Americans are dumb but Europe definitely thinks some tourists are performing a one‑man Broadway show titled “Why Isn’t Everything Exactly Like It Is Back Home?”

Doing your job and then disappearing instead of bothering the guests every five minutes and starting small talk when they came to the restaurant to enjoy the time with whoever they came with, not the server, IS what's considered good service in Europe. It's always so awkward seeing waiters in different tourist destinations having to entertain American customers, to me that's the opposite of having a good restaurant experience. Isn't travelling supposed to educate you on different cultures?
