Graham’s number is an unimaginably large number that arose in a problem in an area of mathematics called Ramsey theory. For a time, it held the Guinness World Record as the largest number ever used in a serious mathematical proof. What’s remarkable is not just how big it is—it’s so enormous that it cannot be written out in ordinary decimal notation, even if every atom in the observable universe were turned into ink and paper. How is it defined? Graham’s number is built using Knuth’s up-arrow notation, which creates numbers that grow far faster than exponentiation. For example: * 3^3 = 27 * 3\uparrow\uparrow3 = 3^{3^3} = 3^{27} \approx 7.6 \times 10^{12} * 3\uparrow\uparrow\uparrow3 is vastly larger still. Graham’s number is defined through a sequence: * g_1 = 3 \uparrow\uparrow\uparrow\uparrow 3 * g_2 = 3 \uparrow^{g_1} 3 (where the number of up-arrows is g_1) * Continue this process… * Graham’s number is g_{64}. Since g_1 is already beyond comprehension, using it to define the number of arrows for g_2 makes the sequence explode in size almost immediately. How big is it? It’s much, much larger than familiar huge numbers such as: * A googol: 10^{100} * A googolplex: 10^{10^{100}} In fact, even a googolplex is essentially insignificant compared to Graham’s number. Can we know anything about it? Surprisingly, yes! Even though we can’t write the whole number, mathematicians can determine properties such as its last few digits. For example, the last 10 digits of Graham’s number are: …2464195387 Is it the biggest number? No. It’s simply a very large specific number. There are many numbers that are vastly larger, including those defined by functions such as: * Busy Beaver numbers * TREE(3) * Certain values from fast-growing hierarchies These numbers grow so quickly that Graham’s number is tiny in comparison. The key point is that Graham’s number is finite.
