@hivewise_au: Story time: this is the most drama and attitude I’ve experienced from another accountant in my career. Here’s the story of how our client’s old accountant was refusing to give us information that belonged to the client 🤨
I don’t think the other accountant was offended by the client going to another firm. I think the other accountant just wanted to bill for their time to upload the docs.

so you're saying the client has been sent the information but has not kept it on file? How is this the old accountants fault?
This is standard practice in the industry. I respect you very much, but if you have to resend information you have provided to the client before, other than trust deeds, constitutions etc. then it is inefficient and you are teaching the client that document storage is not their responsibility, when it is under ASIC due diligence requirements by the director and ATO to retain documents also.

Not the first time, one of property settlement company said they would charge client 90 for resending the settlement documents as they have already provide same docs at the time of settlement.

I agree with the previous accountant, it's the responsibility of the client to retain records and it takes time to send over records

We don’t provide new accountants the information the client already has. In any case, an ethical letter does not satisfy TPB COC confidentiality requirements in sharing information to third parties without express consent of each client. Clients who don’t know where their information is are usually problematic clients.

They just want to charge a final invoice. As a broker I hear of this so many times for simple requests. Unfortunately many are just money grabbers taking advantage of their clients potential vulnerability.
