@simonbeard_official: The $8 coffee post hit a nerve and this is exactly why. A $26 award wage actually costs a business $39 an hour once you add casual loading, super, payroll tax, and work cover. On a public holiday that same worker costs $78 an hour. And super has to be paid every week now which absolutely smashes cash flow. So what happens next. These robotic coffee kiosks are already standard in China. Coffee made in 50 seconds. 200 to 300 cups before a refill. Runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 30 minutes of maintenance daily. One staff member managing 10 kiosks at once. And because it is an asset you get to depreciate it. Compare that to a human where every cost goes up and the tax treatment works against you. The government has created an incentive structure that is pushing business owners toward automation and away from employing humans. That is not a criticism of business owners. That is just rational decision making under the rules that exist. Until the incentive structure changes to actually reward emp
The beers are due to excessive taxes so a robot wouldn't change that much.

Coffee owners have told me that the coffee beans aren't changing until the shipping went psycho. Most say their rents are why they charge customers more.

I don't see why people can't see automation as the future. The cost of a human is so high that you can replace them with robotics for a 10th of the price. Only corporate giants will exist if we keep going this way. They are the only ones with the capital to put into automation and increase efficiency enough to keep any sort of competitive pricing in the future.

Try living on $26 an hr working 40 hrs a week and paying $500 for a studio, utilities, health insurance, phone, food etc. It's impossible.

i dont even hate the idea behind a world full of automation as long as the government finds a way to care for those that become redundant in the process. I have heard that some unions are pushing for a THREE day work week with no loss of pay due to the benefits companies are able to gain from AI.

Agree that the incentive structure is wrong.... For years they rewarded tax exemptions for housing, which leads to people not wanting to work for $15 an hour due to houses costing a million. Can't have it both ways.

Mate. What small business cafe is paying $25k a week in wages? Very few. They also don’t need pay casual loading if they give their staff consistent part time hours.

I paid $17 for 1 plain scone. I seen the scones in the bake cabinet, thinking it would be the cheapest plus there was no price. They brought it out to my table, paid at the end, I cried all the way home.

They could have given minimum wage workers the same thing without penalising the employer simply by reducing taxes on the lowest rate. This way the minimum wage worker ends up getting fired.
