@rockhistory_: Phil Collins reached the peak of his career in the 1980s, particularly between 1981 and 1986, when he combined massive success with Genesis and a meteoric solo career that made him one of the most dominant artists of the decade. After taking over as lead singer of Genesis in 1975 following Peter Gabriel’s departure, he steered the band toward a more accessible and commercial sound with albums like Duke (1980), Abacab (1981), and especially Invisible Touch (1986), which featured major hits. At the same time, he launched his solo career with Face Value (1981), driven by the iconic “In the Air Tonight” and his famous drum fill—a gated reverb sound that defined the era. The peak came with No Jacket Required (1985), one of the best-selling albums of the ’80s, featuring hits like “Sussudio,” “One More Night,” and “Don’t Lose My Number.” That year he performed at both Live Aid concerts (London and Philadelphia), a unique achievement, and racked up more Top 40 singles in the U.S. than any other artist of the decade, whether solo or with Genesis. His ubiquity on the radio, live charisma, emotive voice, and skill as a drummer and songwriter made him almost inescapable. He sold tens of millions of records, won multiple Grammys, and established himself as an icon of 1980s adult contemporary pop, before his popularity remained strong through the end of the decade with …But Seriously (1989)
