Dr. Cara Grudziak, DO :
American pediatrician here, my dad is also a pediatrician as well and we both tell our patients to limit protein. Carbs are king for small kids!

hi french mom here, and our pediatrician has always told the limit is to avoid liver failure in babies, because their liver goes into overdrive when they ingest too much protein

So maybe this is why toddlers/little kids want carbs and fruit

For those wondering - the 10g is weight of food not amount of protein. 10g of egg not 10g of egg protein (if that makes sense.)

I’m sorry, are y’all measuring out how much iron, protein, carbs your kids are having?! If mine eat 3 decent meals a day I feel like we’re doing good😅

I moved to Belgium with my almost 12 month old (now 20 months) and the emphasis on making sure she’s doesn’t eat too much protein is crazy. I asked about switching to whole milk instead of formula and it was like I asked to give her a bottle of wine w the look on her face 🤣

This makes sense, I think babies and children are instinctually gravitated towards simple carbs & fruits because their bodies and brains need A LOT of glucose

I need clarification from 10 g of protein being 1/4 of an egg does France have super eggs because us eggs are like 6-7g of proteins

Just feed your kids a bit of everything good here and there. Don’t limit things let kids eat instinctively and teach good habits that is all

The grams is the WEIGHT OF THE FOOD not the AMOUNT OF PROTEIN.

My kids all weaned from breastmilk to meat/fish/eggs/dairy and they’re all tall, robust and lean. They also grew into kids that ate a rich and varied diet and aren’t picky with veg or anything else. This advice goes against so much of what we know about nutrition especially in early childhood.

You left out and should specify this is about formula and not about solids. So what evidence do you have that connects the formula-protein findings to toddler whole-food intake, since that's not how the research is generally framed?

This research is not very rigorous and it is more observational than actually having identified biological pathways. I would take it with a grain of salt

I find a lot of little ones don’t eat much meat, they prefer carbs & fruit. I’m always worried abt my 1.5 yr old getting enough fiber so she stays regular.

all I was willing to eat as a kid was bare spaghetti with Parmesan... very low protein. I grew up to have insulin resistance.

Let’s not tell Americans that have very likely anemia not to concentrate on not having enough. This is tiktok. Put the disclaimer at the beginning.

American nanny here and a few years ago I looked up feeding guidelines for toddlers and stumbled upon Australia’s and I was surprised that they recommended less food overall than we do here. Not just protein. All foods. And milk.

I’m French and in that case my 2 yo daughter is definitely going to be fat when she gets older because she only wants to eat proteins these days…she’s in her « picky » phase…meals are a nightmare…🫠
