Donnie Darko follows the story of a troubled teenager named Donnie Darko, who lives in a small town in Virginia during October 1988. Donnie struggles with sleepwalking, emotional problems, and feelings of isolation. He often sees a mysterious figure in a creepy rabbit costume named Frank. At the same time, Donnie becomes interested in time travel after talking with his science teacher and reading a mysterious book called The Philosophy of Time Travel, written by an old woman everyone calls Grandma Death. The movie slowly reveals that Donnie is trapped in an alternate timeline called a “Tangent Universe.” According to the book, this universe is unstable and will collapse, destroying reality unless the “Artifact” — the jet engine — is returned to the normal timeline. Donnie realizes that he has been chosen to fix the universe. As the deadline approaches, Donnie falls in love with a girl named Gretchen, but tragedy strikes when she is accidentally killed during a confrontation involving Frank. Donnie then understands what he must do. Using his new understanding of time travel and supernatural powers, he creates a vortex in the sky and sends the jet engine back through time to the exact moment before the story began. In the final scene, the timeline resets. Donnie stays in his room instead of leaving the house, and the jet engine crashes onto him, killing him instantly. Because Donnie sacrificed himself, the Tangent Universe collapses safely, and the normal world is restored. Many characters wake up feeling strangely emotional or connected, as if they faintly remember the events that never happened. The ending of Donnie Darko is intentionally mysterious.
