As a British-Bulgarian who's been living over 25 years in the UK I'd say it took me about 5 years to learn the language and another 4 years to adopt the accent

Shadowing is an excellent technique but it’s not effective to all learners as some of them are not able to “tune” what they hear to what they say (same as singing basically, not everyone can reproduce notes or melodies).
