Strange that you say that money cannot buy leisure. The only reason Naomie is able to spend time so freely is that she has some source of income that allows her this. It is true that some people are high earners and do not spend leisure time abundantly, but this is due to them not seeing it as an option or just not want ing to. In the end wealth is the only real barrier to time autonomy.

I own my own time and have taken many trips like Naomie but eventually you reach a point where it feels a little aimless. Then the structured and packed Japan trips start to feel good and “productive” a la moving with purpose. Maybe it’s an age thing but we all circle around eventually.

Time autonomy is the invisible class marker. the middle and lower classes have t o sell 8 to 14 hours out of their 24 hours. A big chunk of their time is sold to someone else.

Fascinating and enjoyable video, but I simply cannot agree that “being able to spend time in Paris and probably going back soon is not a function of money”. And ending it with “she’s exempt with the compulsion to make time pay”?? Now she may have worked VERY hard for the ability to afford multiple Paris trips whenever she wants, but you’re describing someone so rich that they can travel the world on a whim. Time is money and money is time. Thomas may be constrained by his schedule, but that also allows him to know a solid plan, and have a finite amount of time to enjoy what he has. Endless options leaves one feeling never satisfied, but because he knows he doesn’t have long and this trip will end, he will enjoy it even MORE. I know this video wasn’t bashing Thomas’ trip. But to act like money wasn’t a factor for her because she didn’t have to request time off feels so, strange. Like worshipping a rich person, making them seem like a super hero with the power of infinite time because you just neglected to mention that she has the finances and resources to accomplish several international trips.

I'm a paradox. I don't work full time (I have a tiny business that works very rarely and the money goes to my trips), my child and I live with my parents and his father helps financially. This is not out of choice but because I need to take care of a special needs child (not high support but still, he must be homeschooled). The other side of it, except being relatively poor, is that I have a lot more free time, in which I study 3 languages and read history and sociology. I definitely wouldn't be able to do it if I had to work full time. I know the value of my time and the privilege I have and never waste my time without learning. But my point is, my free time is not a function of a high socio economic class.

Working remotely and a very flexible work schedule is a game changer! I feel very privileged to have that. I think once a lot of the people in powerful positions realized that their employees had the ability to structure their own time, they felt they were losing control.

In a much smaller scale I noticed a difference when I was able to get memberships to the things that I wanted to do more often, especially with my toddler. I no longer feel the need to spend the entire day at an amusement park and make it worth it from the time that it opens to the time that it closes. Having the membership I can go any time and make it as long as I want to. Having multiple memberships only amplifies that. Being able to go to the museum or to experiences, to the zoo, even Chuck E. Cheese, gives me options without the feeling to optimize.
