![Shambhala is a mythical kingdom in Tibetan Buddhism, said to be a hidden land of peace and enlightenment located somewhere in the Himalayas or Inner Asia. Described in texts like the Kalachakra Tantra, it is believed to be ruled by enlightened kings and protected from the outside world. According to prophecy, a future king of Shambhala will lead a final battle against the forces of darkness to restore spiritual truth (Dharma). Though traditionally symbolic, the legend of Shambhala captured the interest of mystics, theosophists, and even the Soviet Union in the 1920s. During this time, the Soviets—despite being officially atheist—took an unusual interest in Eastern mysticism and ancient myths. They loosely supported Nicholas Roerich, a Russian painter and mystic, who led an expedition from 1923 to 1928 across India, Tibet, Mongolia, and the Altai Mountains in search of Shambhala.
