We rushed our Himmel and Frieren cosplays to wear them at a convention, but there was one problem: convention halls rarely look anything like the worlds our characters come from. So instead of relying on the location, we focused on creating the feeling of the characters through photography. Here are a few tricks that completely changed our shots: ✨ 1. Experiment with unusual angles Don’t limit yourself to standard eye-level photos. Try shooting from the ground looking up, from above looking down, or from unexpected perspectives. Some of the most memorable cosplay photos come from angles that feel a little crazy in the moment. ✨ 2. Give your character room to breathe A common mistake is framing too tightly and accidentally cutting off important costume details. Leave space around your subject. Capes, weapons, props, and dramatic poses all need room to shine. ✨ 3. Move. Then move some more. Cosplay isn’t static. Let the cape catch the wind. Turn suddenly. Walk. Spin. Run. Jump. Flowing fabrics, moving hair, and dynamic motion can make a photo feel alive. Even heavily armored characters benefit from action-oriented poses that tell a story rather than simply standing still. ✨ 4. Interact with each other You’re not just two people standing side by side. You’re creating a moment that only those characters could share. Whether it’s completely character accurate or just a fun interaction between friends, storytelling will always stand out more than a static pose. ✨ 5. Don’t be afraid to look silly Some of our favorite photos started as a joke. Try the weird expression. Make the dramatic face. Laugh. Experiment. Characters aren’t made of a single emotion, and sometimes the shots you almost delete end up being the most memorable ones. At the end of the day, the location matters far less than the story you’re telling. A convention hallway can become a fantasy world if you know how to frame it. ✨ Which tip will you use the most when shooting your next cosplay photos? @Mads as frieren
