I’ve had to work hard to break that. I grew up playing without a strong bass player. It’s a whole thang 😆

Dan :
I always leave the bottom alone for the bassist.

Depends on what genre. In country music, I’m down there a lot, sometimes even playing exactly what the bass is. Also, from an audio engineer standpoint, I always cut my lows, so those frequencies don’t “fight”. You just get the upper harmonic texture from the low notes.

A lot of modern worship piano parts step super low on the piano. I’m always thinking, “Don’t you know that’s illegal?”

Say it louder for the people in the back. As a live audio engineer, this is music to my soul.

I used to play with a bass player that used to complain that he couldn't hear the highs on his bass. ON HIS BASS. Baby your highs are gone the instant the drummer hits his cymbals.

its also an indication of how good someone is at voice leading. You need to be able to play ANY chord wherever your hand is with minimal movement.

This is the biggest thing I am trying to teach my team. Know what space you’re taking up. And be a polite make space for others. There’s real gospel teaching in that.

When you are playing alone on the piano, you have free range of all the keys. When you're playing in a band, mostly stick around middle C... that's what I do at least... mostly. 😂

The position depends on the skill level of the bassist 😅

What my pianist don’t know is I can get louder when they over play me but I choose not to because even though it sounds like crap if I do we surely would sound worse

Inversions and omission… where u find the JUCIEST chords especially in neo soul, took me forever to realize that dynamics don’t need to come from range…

I had this weakness coz we had no bass player and I had to do both on one keyboard, it's a bad habit that took me a lot to break.

And now we also compete with synth bass coming in worth the loop tracks.

My mom, who has a concert pianist, always taught people to arch their wrists because if you’re playing a piano Concerto that’s 40 or 50 minutes long, your wrist won’t get as tired if you arch them. You can also drop with that technique instead of having the press the keys to get a loud sound.
