Bullies often see themselves as enforcing social norms.

Basically, bullying is actually upholding the status quo of what is expected- so most don't notice it or don't care

Good one. It causes more damage to the bullied kids because the videos show it to be “so easy”.— This reminds me of the take on work discrimination/harassment videos. they always have advice and “support” for the victims and give their pov. Rather than calling out and shamming the shitty behavior.

Growing up autistic and often being pressured by authority figures into “fitting in” while simultaneously being told to “not fall into peer pressure”… this whole video is so real

Also peer pressure can be good. My friends were good kids so there was peer pressure to get good grades, volunteer, not get in trouble, and join the honor society etc.

as an autistic person, I never understood the anti-bullying and peer pressure campaigns because I was like "none of that is real! no one actually does that!" I took it waaaaaay too literally and it went way over my head lol

i personally think it’s because the portray bullying as without reason but irl most people i’ve known never viewed it as bullying it’s just doesn’t clock to them, “but they speak weird they’re, not like us, they’re weird” n other times they say it a “joke” n the bullied can’t stand up to them or they’ll be proving everything they said

Nobody could've worded this better. There was a woman also talking about this on tiktok. That in bullying PSAs the victim is always portrayed as a good kid who is just a little shy. They make the victim someone palletable and likeable. When in reality the victim is a social pariah, so ppl don't view it as bullying because the victim is not palletable to them so they ignore it.

Notice many of the anti-bullying PSA’s don’t included the ones on teachers who bully students/kids. Education Systems be damned.

my friends started smoking weed in high school and when I didn't want to they stopped hanging out with me and I had no friends. That's what peer pressure actually is. it's not a new kid in a leather jacket and sunglasses coming to school and giving you drugs

it took me so long to understand peer pressure until I realised that if everyone around you does something sometimes the choice is to either exclude yourself or do the thing as well but it's never portrayed like that

Society likes being a society. And society is a mob. The people making these campaigns are the system that are implementing it. And the fact that their campaigns still make “the loser with no friends” the bad guy is a perfect example of how the people making it have been and always will be the bullies they pretend to oppose.

I feel like nobody calls bullying what it is: targeted harassment and it follows people into adulthood. we don't really care at large as a society about it so they tell kids to like shrug it off or not let it get to them but that's not the solution

I imagine that's one of the factors why americans have such a big problem with gun violence at schools. It's not only the gun culture, it's also seeing your communities (the school, friends, family) fail you, even when following social norms (european btw, haven't been to the states).

Pro social doesnt refer to things that benefit one socially, it means anything intended to benefit pthers or society as a whole. It’s used in a lot of academic work to basically mean”good and right behavior that any moral human being would support bc it supports other humans instead of trying to mhurt others. Likewise, antisocial means the opposite, actions intended to hurt other humans. So while I agree with the actual point you’re making, bullying is most drcid Roy antisocial and not pro social and it’s important to know the difference.

I think we could take this a hell of a lot further, into the realm of actual crimes and harmful behaviour. A lot of addicts are stuck in that cycle because all of their friends are also addicts, so extracting themselves from that environment is anti-social from their perspective.

Civil rights movement in the mid 20th century south. The society itself was (and is) bullying and iniquitous. Activists and protesters were “anti-social.” Rosa Parks was “anti-social.”

I saw a tweet along the lines of “people will always like confident cruelty over cowardly kindness because they cruelty can be reformed but cowardice cannot”. There’s more nuance but I think that a good way of framing it

I mean, that’s the kind of bullying the government wants is it not? Pro-social bullying creates a demand for conformity. Many governments have encouraged it, specifically England during world war 1 with the white feather movement

also those stupid PSAs always triggered the same reaction in me that advertisements do which makes me want to do the opposite behavior of what the ad or PSA wants so 11yo me was like "well now I have to do drugs because I'm not doing what these idiots want"
