Imam Hussain (a.s.), the third Imam in the Shia tradition, son of Imam Ali (a.s.) and Fatimah al-Zahra (a.s.), embodied the pinnacle of courage, justice, righteousness, and unwavering devotion to truth; refusing to pledge allegiance to the corrupt Umayyad caliphate that demanded submission to oppression and deviation from the pure teachings of Islam, he chose the path of sacrifice over compromise. On the 2nd of Muharram, Hussain (a.s.) and his caravan arrived in the plains of Karbala in present-day Iraq, where they were besieged, deprived of water from the Euphrates River for days amid scorching heat, and ultimately martyred on the 10th of Muharram—known as Ashura—in one of the most heart-wrenching episodes in Islamic history. The events unfolded with immense bravery: Hussain’s infant son Ali Asghar was slain by an arrow while in his father’s arms; his brother Abbas (a.s.), the standard-bearer, was killed while fetching water; and one by one, the loyal companions and family members, including the young sons of Muslim ibn Aqil, laid down their lives defending the Imam and the principles of justice, freedom, and monotheism.
